Closer To Closing Buyer

It’s getting closer to Moving Day . . .

and there are still a million things to do!

Among The Most Important Is Transferring Utilities.:

For easy reference here’s Joe’s list of local phone numbers you may need to contact. www.JoeKarcie.com/Useful-Numbers

Among the most important is having electric, gas, water, and garbage service ready to go on your close of escrow date. Start calling utility companies approximately 7 days before closing.

Whether you are moving across town or across the country, relocating ranks as one of life’s more stressful experiences. There’s so much to take care of that it can be easy to overlook important details. Here are some tips to help make moving more manageable.

4 to 6 weeks before moving day:

  • De-clutter. Relocating is a great time to get rid of anything you don’t want or don’t use. There will be less to pack and unpack. The last thing you want in your new home is old junk.
  • Sell anything you don’t want to pack at a garage sale. When it’s over, take everything that remains to Goodwill or another charity.
  • Keep a detailed record of all moving expenses. Your costs (and donations) may be tax deductible depending on the reasons for your move.

2 to 3 weeks before moving day:

  • Contact a reputable mover or rent a moving truck. Be sure to get referrals or references, check with the Better Business Bureau, get estimates and purchase moving insurance.
  • For long distance moves, make transportation & lodging reservations in advance.
  • Notify healthcare professionals (doctors, dentists, veterinarians) of your move and ask for referrals and record transfers.
  • Obtain your children’s school records to make for an easier transfer.
  • Notify lawn service, cleaning and security companies when service should be terminated. Cancel or transfer deliveries and newspaper subscriptions.
  • Check your homeowners’ insurance and make arrangements for new coverage.
  • Notify the post office that you are moving. An online Change of Address form is available on the United States Postal Service website at usps.com.
  • If this is a long distance move, have your car serviced for the trip. Pack an arrival kit of necessities in case you arrive before the mover.
  • Check on personal items that might be at the bank in a safe deposit box, on layaway, in a repair shop, or at the dry cleaners.
  • Contact telephone, electric, gas, cable/satellite, trash & water companies to set a specific date when service will be discontinued. Contact utility companies in your new town about service start dates.
  • Make arrangements for transporting your plants & pets.

Moving day:

  • Have tools handy for breaking down beds and appliances.
  • Do a final walk-thru of every room. Check the basement, yard, attic, garage & closets.
  • Have the final payment for the movers and money for a tip.
  • Move valuables (jewelry, legal documents, family photos and collections) yourself – don’t send them with the moving company.
